SAFETY FIRST As with many activities, safety is important in science and certain rules apply when conducting experiments. It can cause permanent damage to your eyes!

Tape red cellophane over the glass of a flashlight. In that way, you will not lose your night vision when you shine the light on the chart. Place the appropriate month of the year uppermost against the northern sky to find the constellations. Can you find all the constellations on the chart? TYPES OF STARS Stars are classified according to their surface temperature. Astronomers can determine a star’s temperature by the type of light it emits. Red stars are cooler than blue stars as you can see from Table 4.

This phenomenon is known as the Doppler effect. You have probably observed this effect with sound. If a car is approaching you with its horn blaring, the pitch seems higher than normal because the vibrations are more frequent than normal. The sound waves are “squeezed” together because the horn is traveling toward you as it emits sound waves. Thus, one wave follows the next sooner than it would if the car were at rest. When the car passes you and moves away, the pitch seems lower than normal. The car is moving away from the waves that strike your ear, so the waves are “stretched” and reach you less frequently than they normally would.
